Data centers consume more electricity per square meter than any other building type. A mid-sized data center can use as much electricity as a small town.

The IT loads that power servers, storage systems, and networking equipment are essential and largely non-negotiable. But the cooling systems, power distribution infrastructure, and lighting that support those IT loads can represent 30–50% of total data center energy consumption — much of which is potentially reducible.

Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE)

The data center industry uses a metric called Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) to measure energy efficiency. PUE is calculated by dividing total facility energy by IT equipment energy.

A PUE of 1.0 would be perfectly efficient — all energy goes directly to IT equipment. A PUE of 2.0 means that for every watt of IT power, another watt is consumed by infrastructure. Most data centers operate between 1.2 and 2.0.

Continuous PUE monitoring is the foundation of data center energy management.
