The cloud infrastructure decisions you make early in a platform company's life follow you for years. The database architecture you choose when you have 100 customers becomes the architecture you're running with 10,000 customers — or you've paid the price of migrating it.
Three years ago, when we were building the infrastructure that now powers EC.DATA's energy monitoring platform, we made infrastructure choices that we want to share transparently — because they reflect how we think about reliability, security, and scale.
Why We Chose Microsoft Azure
EC.DATA operates on Microsoft Azure infrastructure across multiple geographic regions. We made this choice for several reasons:
**Enterprise customer requirements** — Many of our enterprise customers and partners have Azure as their primary cloud provider. Infrastructure compatibility simplifies data integration and security compliance reviews.
**Regulatory compliance** — Azure's compliance portfolio covers the regulatory frameworks relevant to our customers' industries — ISO 27001, SOC 2, GDPR compliance architecture, and healthcare-specific standards.
**Geographic distribution** — Azure's global region coverage allows us to store and process data in the geographic regions that our customers require for data residency compliance.
Data Architecture for Energy Intelligence
EC.DATA's data architecture handles time-series data from thousands of simultaneously connected devices. A single large deployment may generate millions of meter readings per day.
We use time-series optimized databases for real-time monitoring data, combined with columnar analytics databases for historical trend analysis and reporting. This separation enables EC.DATA to maintain both real-time responsiveness and deep historical analytical capability.
Security and Privacy
Energy data is operational data — it reveals when buildings are occupied, when equipment operates, and how organizations function. We treat it with the same security standards we would apply to financial data.
All data is encrypted in transit and at rest. Customer data is logically isolated. Access controls follow the principle of least privilege at every layer of the stack.
