Developed in the late 1970s, Modbus remains one of the most widely used industrial communication standards in the world. Despite its age, Modbus continues to power modern smart infrastructure — and EC.DATA is built to speak its language fluently.

How Modbus Communication Works

Modbus uses a master-slave architecture. A central system (master) sends requests to devices (slaves). Each device has a unique address. The master requests data from registers stored in the device — registers that contain measurements such as voltage, current, energy consumption, and power factor.

Two physical variants are most common: **Modbus RTU** over RS-485 serial connections, and **Modbus TCP** over standard Ethernet networks.

Modbus and the EC.DATA Platform
