What Is Power Factor?
Power factor is a measure of how efficiently electrical power is used. A power factor of 1.0 (or 100%) means that all electrical current drawn from the grid is doing useful work. A lower power factor means that some current is being drawn to maintain electrical fields in motors and transformers — work that doesn't show up on your energy bill but still costs you money.
Most commercial utility tariffs include a power factor clause. If a facility's power factor drops below a threshold — typically 0.85 or 0.90 — the utility applies a penalty charge to the monthly bill.
Why Power Factor Degrades
Power factor is primarily affected by inductive loads — equipment that creates magnetic fields to function. Common culprits include:
